RIO DE JANEIRO, November 18. /TASS/. More than 80 countries have joined the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty that was established on Brazil’s initiative, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said.
“Eighty-one countries, 26 international organizations, nine financial institutions, and 31 non-governmental and charity organizations have already joined,” he said opening the Group of Twenty summit in Rio de Janeiro.
The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, the flagship initiative by Brazil, which held the presidency in the G20 in 2024, was set up to raise money and create public policy and technologies to eradicate poverty and hunger in the world.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said earlier that Russia will announce its decision to join the alliance at the G20 summit.
Rio de Janeiro is hosting a G20 summit on November 18 and 19. According to the Brazilian side, forty-two nations are taking part. Russia is represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
